The exhibition "The wonderful anemones of Hiiumaa" at the University of Tartu Botanical Garden.
From 3 May to 10 June, the exhibition "Hiiumaa's Amazing Anemones" at the University of Tartu Botanical Garden will showcase forms of the yellow anemones and the wood anemones found in the nature of Hiiumaa, the species diversity of which is probably unique in the world.
The form is the lowest taxon within a species, and is used to denote a plant that shows insignificant abnormalities (mostly in flower or leaf colour, external habit, leaf splitting). The word 'variety' has been adopted to designate the upper forms introduced at the exhibition. A variety is a horticultural form whose value and varietal diversity are highly valued, especially in ornamental horticulture.
Wonderful anemones from Hiiumaa will introduce a series introducing the varieties and breeds of Estonian ornamental plants, breeders, breeding work and history. The exhibition is one of the activities of the national programme "Collection, conservation and use of genetic resources of agricultural crops".
This year's exhibition takes the visitor on a tour of the botanic garden's collections. A total of eight varieties of wood anemones and 51 varieties of yellow anemones from Hiiumaa are growing in the various collections. They include semi-double and double blooms as well as varieties with decorative foliage. Flowering of the plants can be seen in the first half of May, but some varieties start flowering as early as the end of April, while others do not flower until the second week of May.
The exhibition is accompanied by an introductory leaflet in Estonian and English, with a map showing the habitats of the anemone varieties growing in the collections of the University of Tartu Botanical Garden, marked with either yellow (yellow anemone variety) or white (bushy anemone variety) flowers. In the garden, the plants are marked with a name tag and a yellow flower-shaped label.
Part of the exhibition is located in the botanic garden's classroom and part of the exhibition is located in the botanic garden's outdoor area. The part of the exhibition in the classroom can be visited with a ticket during the opening hours of the greenhouse from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The part of the exhibition in the garden can be visited during the opening hours of the garden from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m..
